What is a Vinyl plotter
A vinyl cutter is a type of CNC precision machining equipment. It drives cutters (or lasers, pressure rollers, etc.) to perform precise scribing, cutting, or engraving on the surface of various materials based on pre-set patterns/text files from a computer. Without the need for ink, it directly achieves a "physical forming" processing effect.
As an important branch of industrial automation equipment, its core advantages lie in high precision, high efficiency, and batch replicability. It is widely applicable to industrial production, commercial processing, and other scenarios, and also serves as a common supporting equipment for textile machinery such as embroidery machines.
II. Core Principles and Working Methods of Vinyl Cutters
Design graphic files on a computer, transmit instructions to the vinyl cutter, and the machine controls the tool holder to drive the cutter head for pressure cutting on materials according to the preset path, ultimately completing the physical forming of patterns/text.
- Design: Users create the required text or patterns using professional graphic design software (such as CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator) or the software built into the vinyl cutter on a computer.
- Transmission: Send the designed graphic files to the vinyl cutter via a USB data cable.
- Cutting:
- The core of a vinyl cutter is a precisely movable tool holder (capable of moving back and forth, left and right) equipped with a sharp cutter head;
- After receiving the instructions, the machine controls the cutter head to perform pressure cutting along the path of the computer-generated graphics;
- During cutting, the material is adsorbed on the machine table by adhesive. The cutter head only cuts through the surface layer of the material (such as the colored film of self-adhesive paper) without penetrating the underlying backing paper.
- Peeling and Transfer: After cutting, remove the excess parts (a process called "waste removal") to retain the target text or patterns; then use transfer film (a transparent adhesive film) to paste the patterns onto the target object.
III. Characteristics and Applications of Vinyl Cutters
It is mainly used for cutting soft and thin materials such as self-adhesive stickers (immediate stickers), reflective film, transfer film, canvas, and window stickers.
It performs precise contour cutting and does not print colors (colors come from the material itself). Its core task is to "cut out" the designed shape from the material.
