Home sewing machine sewing tips: How to sew stretch fabrics smoothly

Stretch fabric is a favorite among many sewing enthusiasts.

We often use it to make various types of underwear, T-shirts, sportswear, and more. However, sewing stretch fabric is not so simple. During the sewing process, issues like skipped stitches, fabric puckering, and uneven stitching often occur. Many users on Xiaohongshu also ask, "What are the techniques for sewing stretch fabric?"

So, today, let's specifically talk about the key points to note when sewing stretch fabric!

Sewing Machine Needle Selection

Home sewing machine needles come in several models, chosen based on fabric thickness. For thin fabrics, you can choose No. 9 or No. 11 needles; for thicker fabrics, you can choose No. 14 or No. 16 needles. This also applies to stretch fabric. For sewing stretch fabric, we can choose No. 14 needles. Of course, for those who want even better sewing results, you can also choose ballpoint needles, also known as round-point needles or anti-skip needles, which can effectively prevent skipped stitches on the fabric.

Stitch Selection

Home sewing machines have various stitches, such as straight stitch, buttonhole stitch, zigzag stitch, decorative stitch...
When sewing ordinary stretch fabric, we generally use the straight stitch. However, if sewing elastic bands, waistbands, or tapes, then we need to choose the specialized No. 05 stretch fabric stitch (shown in the yellow circle in the image).

Of course, there's also overlocking, which is part of basic sewing and is often used. For overlocking stretch fabric, we can choose the No. 08 overlock stitch (shown in the blue circle in the image).

Additionally, for sewing elastic pant hems, we need to use the No. 10 blind hem stretch stitch (shown in the black circle in the image). For buttonholes on stretch fabric, you can choose stitches No. 31 and No. 32 (shown in the yellow box in the image).

Stitch Length and Width Selection

After selecting the stitch, we also need to appropriately adjust the stitch length and width. The key to sewing stretch fabric lies here!

We need to increase the stitch length to 3.5mm.

The difference when the stitch length is 2.0mm versus 3.5mm: one is uneven, the other is smooth and flat.

Operating Technique

Sewing technique is also very important. First, insert the needle into the fabric and start sewing. When feeding the fabric, try to maintain a constant speed, keep the fabric straight without twisting, and at the same time, be careful not to pull the fabric! Pulling may lead to skipped stitches and thread breakage.

So, that's our summary of stretch fabric sewing techniques.
